This is Angel. She had a heat stroke. She died today a tragic and preventable death in the arms of one of our volunteers. It was 82 degrees and breezy in Houston when we were called by a good samaritan who found her on their porch. Our volunteer went and picked her up and rushed her to the vet. Her temperature was so high the thermometer couldn’t read it which means 106+ degrees.
Heat stroke in dogs is completely preventable. Please educate the people you know, share Angel’s story and maybe we can save another dog. We did everything we could for her, but it turned out the damage was too severe and we let her go. The people that found her did the right thing by giving her water and calling rescue, but they did not know she needed to be brought inside. If you ever see a dog lost on a hot day please bring it inside no matter what the breed. I am not posting this story to point fingers or anger anyone. We simply want to spread the word about the dangers of hot weather and summer hasn’t even started yet.
Keep the pooches cool and out of the sun. Especially those with little short noses and flat faces
This broke my heart. My Balthy gets overheated easily in the summer and loves to cool off in the lake/ on the cold tile floor and eat ice cubes.
I’ve smashed two car windows for distressed doggahs that are left in their car without cracking the window and I will not think twice to do it again.
I hate to say this because the story is incredibly sad, but telling people to bring unfamiliar animals into their home is just not good advice. People should not just open the front door and invite a strange animal into their house. No matter how friendly or harmless an unfamiliar animal may seem, you never know how it’s going to react in new situations or surroundings (or what diseases, etc. it may have), and any distressed or overwhelmed animal can quickly become a threat. Precautions should first be taken to familiarize themselves with its health and temperament and letting it adjust to them, their home, and anyone/pet in it—it’s impossible to adequately do that in emergency situations.
If you find a dog showing signs of heatstroke, you should coax it into the shade or a cool garage; set out cool, fresh water for it; spray the dog off with COOL* water; and, if possible, set a fan out to blow on the dog. If it will let you, you can (cautiously) wipe down its belly/paws with cool water. Then you should contact a vet or shelter for help. And, if you’re just hellbent on giving it the benefit of AC, it’s probably better to blast the AC in your car and coax the dog in there than to just let it into your house.
(*Always use cool, never cold or ice water. Trying to cool an animal with heatstroke too rapidly can do way more harm than good.)

Regardless of what you think of him as a politician, how can anyone honestly hate these two as a couple?
